Lycabettus Hill in Athens to be renovated for 1.5 million euro

The iconic landmark will become safer and more attractive to visitors and local residents

The City of Athens has announced that its iconic landmark Lycabettus Hill is to undergo a major overhaul. The project aims to make it safer and more attractive to visitors and local residents.

The entire project is budgeted at 1.5 million euro, according to the plans drawn up by the previous municipal administration. The renovation work, which is planned to start in a few days, is  estimated to take around one year and a half to complete.

Kostas Bakoyannis, mayor of Athens, will ask the Public Properties Company to make a concession of the 3.5 hectares that it owns on Lycabettus Hill (out of a total of 44.2 hectares) to the municipality, so it can press ahead with its plans for a comprehensive makeover.

Improved environment for living

Athens mayor announced that the aim of the project is to give  citizens and visitors not only an improved environment for living and going about their daily activities but also a place which will enrich the cultural life of the Greek capital.

By this action and using the land donated by the Public Properties Company, Athens Municipality will complete the project by creating an urban forest of unique beauty and usefulness, not only for Athens but for all of Attica, the mayor said.

Project activities include pilot implementation of innovative anti-flooding techniques which use aesthetically-pleasing and natural, ecologically-sound materials, as well as the laying of a special tarmac on a road running through the woods for about 1,700 meters. This road will not only fit harmoniously in the landscape but in addition will provide comprehensive anti-flooding protection.

Other planned steps for Lycabettus Hill involve a refurbishment of about 3 kilometres of existing footpaths and pedestrian routes which connect different sites on the Hill.
