Avec Helsinki, Lyon sera la première ville à porter ce titre
En 2018 s’est tenu le premier concours de la Capitale Européenne du Smart Tourism (Tourisme Intelligent): un titre qui distingue les villes européennes qui font le meilleur travail pour promouvoir et diversifier l'offre touristique du Vieux Continent, tout en respectant l'environnement, le bien-être des habitants et les principes du développement durable. A noter, le secteur du tourisme est bien développé en Europe et constitue l’une des plus grandes sources de PIB (environ 10%, selon la Commission Européenne). Mais si bonnes que soient les performances du continent, l’Europe est confrontée à d’autres destinations émergentes et établies et doit donc suivre les dernières évolutions dans le domaine afin de conserver sa position de leader.
Après une compétition féroce qui s’est déroulée entre le 11 avril et le 30 juin 2018 parmi 38 villes de plus de 100 000 habitants, les villes d'Helsinki et de Lyon ont démontré les meilleurs résultats et ont surperformé les autres. Elles étaient remarquables dans les catégories accessibilité, durabilité, numérisation, patrimoine culturel et créativité. Mais surtout, les villes ont prouvé qu’ils ont la capacité d’etre un bon exemple pour les autres destinations touristiques qui commencent à développer un tourisme durable et intelligent.
Les prix ont été remis le 7 novembre à Bruxelles, à l'occasion de la Journée européenne du tourisme. Les lauréats bénéficieront d’une campagne de promotion de la Commission Européenne. La ville de Lyon, quant à elle, lance cette année une vaste campagne de promotion du tourisme durable: «World Travel Influencer Meetings».
