The Spanish capital is going green
“Madrid + Natural” consist of a series of guidelines to tackle the global concern of climate change through multiple local solutions. The work is part of a collaborative assessment to the local City Hall and includes ideas for greening buildings, infrastructure and open spaces in the city of Madrid. Those nature-based solutions aim to regulate Madrid’s urban environment and respond to problems like pollution, heavy storm events increase, draught, periods of abnormally hot temperatures or local biodiversity loss.
To transform the capital into an eco-sustainable city, the project involves the increase of the number of green areas and promoting community allotments. The plan envisages the installation of green-roofing and green-walls - with both horizontal and vertical surfaces covered in greenery - as well as the transformation of disused lots into parks and gardens. Madrid + Natural also highlights the importance of retrofitting unused social infrastructure to reinvigorate neighbourhoods and improve wellbeing.
