Madrid will ban cars in the city center by 2020

The new measures are part of a bigger plan

Mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena, plans to ban personal cars from the center of the Spanish capital. The plan will take effect by 2020. Urban architects and planners are now working on restructuring many of the city’s streets and transform them to entirely pedestrian areas. Only bikes, buses and taxis will be allowed to enter Madrid’s Gran Via by 2019, when the mayor's term ends.

This is an eco initiative and is part of the "sustainable mobility plan" of Madrid which aims at reducing car usage from 29% to 23%. Drivers who don't follow the regulations will be fined. Moreover, the most polluting cars will pay more for parking.
