Malta to transform fuel storage facility into a research and innovation hub

Is-Siċċa will also have multiple recreational spaces

On 22 March, the Maltese government announced its plans to transform the San Luċjan fuel storage facility in Birżebbuġa into a modern establishment that offers opportunities for recreation and serves as a hub for research and innovation. Titled ‘Is-Siċċa’, the regeneration project will cost a total of EUR 40 million.

Making Southern Malta more attractive

According to a press release, the development will feature more than 18,000 square metres of recreational spaces and breathe new life into the Qajjenza area in Birżebbuġa and Marsaxlokk. In addition to this, Is-Siċċa will serve as “a Mediterranean hub for research and innovation”. More specifically, the government hopes that the hub will attract new economic niches and industries such as aquaculture and blue/circular economies. 

Beyond this, Is-Siċċa will house spaces for start-ups, incubation centres, and education facilities. Entrepreneurs in the fields of sustainability and innovation will also be able to gain access to various services and resources in the future establishment.

An innovative design

Designed by Pininfarina, Is-Siċċa will have a unique and innovative design that focuses on sustainability. Expanding on this, the Maltese government disclosed that up to 70% of the energy consumed by the modern facility will be derived from renewable sources and energy-efficient systems. Further commenting on the project, the Senior Vice President of Pininfarina Giovanni de Niederhausern shared:

“Is-Siċċa is inspired by prominent cliffs overlooking it-Torri ta’ San Luċjan; the design follows a soft, smooth movement which connects two elements, water and earth, generating an unprecedented bond between nature and architecture. It will include diverse uses such as multiple commercial and recreational spaces for the local community, as well as areas for educational, research, and innovation purposes, serving as an incubation space for eco and blue industries.”
