Milan-Cortina hanno vinto il diritto di ospitare le Olimpiadi Invernali 2026, ha annunciato il Comune di Milano. Il voto era tra le città italiane e quella svedese - Stoccolma-Are. Milano ha ricevuto 47 voti, contro i 34 di Stoccolma.
La buona notizia per l'Italia segna il ritorno dell'Europa ai Giochi Olimpici, l'evento sportivo è stato ospitato da Pyeongchang, Corea del Sud nel 2018 e Pechino organizzerà i Giochi nel 2022. L'Italia ha ospitato due Olimpiadi invernali, Cortina nel 1956 e Torino nel 2006. Sarà il primo evento di questo tipo a Milano.
Milano è la capitale economica e finanziaria della nazione e uno dei principali hub mondiali della moda. Milano si è sviluppata in modo significativo negli ultimi anni ed è stata ulteriormente favorita ospitando l'Expo World Fair nel 2015. Il sindaco di Milano Giuseppe Sala insieme ai membri della delegazione di Milano-Cortina ha celebrato la vittoria della gara per ospitare i Giochi Olimpici Invernali del 2026.

I luoghi per i giochi in arrivo sono divise tra Milano e Cortina d'Ampezzo. L'evento inizierà il 6 febbraio a San Siro, sede delle squadre di calcio del Milan e dell'Inter, e finirà il 22 febbraio con una cerimonia di chiusura all'Arena di Verona. Altri eventi si terranno in Val di Fiemme e in Valtellina.
