Depuis 1880, la République française célèbre sa fête nationale le 14 juillet. Connu parmi les anglophones sous le nom de «Bastille Day», il marque la Prise de la Bastille, célèbre lieu de détention de prisonniers politiques à Paris, qui a eu lieu en 1789. Ces événements sont considérés comme un tournant dans la révolution française.
La prise de la Bastille est un acte de rébellion contre l'absolutisme de la monarchie française. Bien que, au moment des faits, il n'y avait qu'une poignée de prisonniers, cet acte de révolte a ouvert la voie à des événements historiques tels que l'abolition du féodalisme, la proclamation de la Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen, pour nommer quelques-uns.
Le 14 juillet marque également l'unité du peuple français (ou la Fête de la Fédération) datant d'un an plus tard.
Naturellement, la fête nationale est accompagnée de grandes festivités. Les préparatifs des unités de l'armée commencent tôt le matin pour permettre la parade traditionnelle le long du boulevard des Champs-Élysées.
Des milliers de personnes, parmi lesquelles le président de la République, assistent au défilé militaire du soir. Un spectacle aérien avec des démonstrations de l'armée française est également à prévoir, ainsi qu'un concert impressionnant plus tard dans la soirée, qui se terminera par de spectaculaires feux d'artifice thématiques. Le défilé militaire est considéré comme le plus ancien et le plus grand sans interruption du Vieux continent.
En 2020, à cause de la pandémie Covid-19, certaines communes ont annulé les rassemblements publics. Le feu d'artifice, cependant, sera probablement maintenue.
