Amsterdam bans creation of new hotels
Another piece in the overall strategy to reduce tourist flows to the city
The city’s main square has undergone massive renovations and is now open for pedestrians, cyclists – and event organisers!
Novo Mesto residents woke up to a brand new, refurbished main square on the 10 May. The large-scale reconstruction of the area was widely anticipated by citizens and the city’s mayor, Gregor Macedoni, hailed the great success of the municipality’s efforts to improve the city. The opening of the new main square was celebrated with a day jam-packed with events – concerts, performances, food tasting ceremonies, sales and tours of the renovated areas.
After much deliberation and long debates in the Novo Mesto municipal council, it was decided that the main square will be a pedestrian-only zone. No car traffic will be allowed in the newly renovated parts of the city. The cause was championed by local business owners as well as citizens.
The next big event that will be hosted by the city’s new main square is “Krka ŽIVI” (Krka lives) – a festival that promotes an active lifestyle and involves events in and around the Krka river. For the first time in the city and event’s history, an open kitchen offering local delicacies will be hosted by the municipality. So, on 25 May, head on over to Novo Mesto’s brand new main square and take part in all the activities planned for the day – boating, fishing, volleyball and basketball tournaments and much, much more.
