Estos son monumentos a las crisis de escasez de viviendas que ocurrieron hace más de 200 años
A finales de la semana pasada, el municipio español de Paterna informó que se han iniciado las obras de renovación del Espacio Cultural de las Cuevas del Batà. Cuevas en este caso se refiere a viviendas urbanas históricas que han sido excavadas en el suelo en algún lugar entre finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX.
Muchas de estas curiosas cuevas urbanas aún están habitadas en la actualidad y, por tanto, representan un importante patrimonio arquitectónico y sociocultural para la localidad, ubicada en la provincia de Valencia.
A diferencia de las viviendas cueva prehistóricas, estas cuevas urbanas deben su existencia a las trampas en los desarrollos socioculturales en tiempos mucho más modernos, hace unos 200 años. Tres condiciones llevaron a la gente a considerar la opción de viviendas subterráneas: crecimiento de la población local, aumento de las rentas señoriales y deterioro de las condiciones de los trabajadores. Estos factores hicieron que los habitantes no pudieran permitirse el lujo de tener sus propias casas y se dedicaron a excavar la roca calcárea y blanda que se encuentra en Paterna.
Estas viviendas tienen sus propios respiraderos y chimeneas que permiten la ventilación (imprescindible para la habitabilidad) y la posibilidad de cocinar. En la ciudad se pueden encontrar dos tipos de cuevas urbanas. Las primeras son las "coves afrontades", que presentan una fachada muy parecida a una casa normal, y las otras son "coves enclotades", que rodean un patio común sin tener acceso a una calle normal y, por tanto, no se ven desde el exterior.
Las viviendas cueva deben ser encaladas con cal una o dos veces al año. Exactamente, tal blanqueo está incluido en las renovaciones anunciadas, que comenzaron la semana pasada y se espera que continúen durante 3 o 4 semanas.
El Ayuntamiento de Paterna, a través de su Área de Patrimonio Histórico, y junto con la empresa pública Gestión y Servicios de Paterna, está velando por las obras de reparación y mejora de las fachadas, muros, lucernarios y chimeneas de las viviendas-cuevas, muchas de las cuales están integradas en los alrededores de la Torre de Paterna.
