The cities met last week in Katowice to draft a plan on how to facilitate cycling between their territories
On Friday, representatives of 11 Polish local governments met in Katowice and agreed to construct 120 kilometres of bicycle highways. City representatives agreed on a total of 8 lanes, which will ultimately make it easier to circulate sustainably between the concerned territories of the Metropolis of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie (GZM).
The agreement dating from 20 May concerns the first four of the total 8 highways for bicycles that will be created in the GZM metropolis. The authorities that took part in the first official agreements are: Będzin, Chorzów, Czeladź, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Gliwice, Katowice, Mysłowice, Ruda Śląska, Sosnowiec, Świętochłowice, and Zabrze.

The construction of the first four will start in 2023, while the remaining four will be built in 2024. What's more, the authority representing these cities is already in consultation with private companies to ensure there will be a public metropolitan bicycle service available.
The bicycle highways (known locally as velostrady GZM) are fast bicycle routes, mostly separated from the road and car traffic, allowing for a safe mobility between the various localities of the metropolis.
According to the GZM metropolis, the establishment of Velostrad GZM is one of the strategic activities undertaken by the municipalities of the Metropolis. The establishment of Velostrad GZM will be entirely financed from the budget of the administrative entity and external subsidies.
Local authorities expect that by doing this, they will improve commuting to work. They also hope to convince residents that owning a bike is worthy as it enhances the experience of sightseeing on two wheels.
