Prague wants to make public transport free on days with poor air quality

The suggested measure comes as an attempt to meet EU regulations and protect the citizens from heavy smog

Big European cities are literary suffocated under the heavily polluted air this winter. Strolling down the streets of Krakow, Warsaw or Sofia, one can easily see the air around. The picturesque Czech capital, unfortunately, is no exception. As a response, the ruling coalition of Prague considers seriously the opportunity of introducing free public transport system and bike services on days of particularly high concertation of airborne particles (above 100 micrograms per cubic metre), reports Prague Morning.

This will be done with the objective of nudging people into using more environmentally friendly transport solutions and ditch the car on days of heavy smog. Formally, the suggestion has not been made yet, but it is highly likely that it soon turns into reality, considering it originates from the ruling party.

Similar measure has already been promised by Sofia authorities: as means to stimulate people to get out of the car, the City council introduced the daily ticket at the price of 1 BGN (0.50 euro), instead of the regular 4. However, despite the big number of days with particularly bad air quality this winter, the Bulgarian capital has sold the ticket only for 2 days.
