El primer día del nuevo año, la página web municipal de Barcelona informó que una calle del barrio Bon Pastor de la ciudad ha recibido una nueva capa de calzada con un material sostenible compuesto principalmente por plásticos no reutilizables. Esto está destinado a servir como un proyecto piloto para observar y medir la resistencia de este pavimento al tráfico pesado. En caso de tener éxito, se aplicará en más calles y barrios de la capital catalana.
Las estimaciones indican que la fabricación de este nuevo pavimento ha supuesto una disminución de 17 toneladas de CO2 respecto a lo que se habría emitido si el pavimento se hubiera fabricado con métodos y materiales tradicionales. Para realizar el material de la calzada para el tramo, los fabricantes han utilizado un total de 4.500 kg de plástico que no se ha podido reciclar. En cambio, se les ha dado un uso final en su ciclo de vida. Para poner en contexto, esta es una cifra que equivaldría a unas 3.000 bolsas de basura domésticas llenas de plástico.
El nuevo pavimento instalado en el Paseo de la Verneda, en el barrio de Bon Pastor. El nuevo material, que incorpora trazas de plásticos que ya habían terminado su vida útil, tiene una mayor resistencia (respecto a los pavimentos normales) y un mejor comportamiento ante el paso regular de vehículos pesados como autobuses y camiones.
Si la prueba piloto es satisfactoria, este tipo de pavimento se instalará en otros tramos de la ciudad. La colocación de este aglomerado se ha realizado de forma conjunta con la promotora AMSA y las ingenierías BAC e IM3, adjudicatarias del contrato de mantenimiento de aceras en Barcelona.
