La capitale italiana produce più spazzatura di quanto possa sopportare e alcuni residenti hanno preso in mano la situazione. Si incontrano ogni fine settimana al mattino presto per pulire, dipingere e ripulire la città eterna. Roma produce 4.500 tonnellate di spazzatura al giorno. Molto più della media italiana. Nella città letteralmente ogni dieci passi si possono vedere cestini e gli impiegati municipali che puliscono.
I problemi di spazzatura di Roma esistitono da molti anni. Roma ha lottato per affrontare i suoi rifiuti per decenni, con appaltatori discutibili assunti tante volte. La vasta discarica di Malagrotta a Roma è risultata inadeguata rispetto agli standard europei e fu chiusa nel 2013. Da allora la città ha fatto ricorso alla spedizione di rifiuti in diverse parti d'Italia ed anche in altri paesi europei. Virginia Raggi, Sindaco di Roma, ha reso la questione come una caratteristica centrale della sua campagna e ha promesso di ridurre drasticamente gli sprechi e aumentare il riciclaggio quando è entrata in carica nel 2016. I cassonetti separati, i camion extra di spazzatura e i nuovi impianti di trattamento necessari per raggiungere questo obiettivo sono già visibili.
