Multimillion-euro investments are planned by the municipality to renovate schools and introduce modern learning practices
Urmas Klaas, mayor of Tartu, has truly become the the champion of educational facilities in the Estonian city. He is fully committed to bringing schools in Tartu into the 21st century by renovating them and supporting them in the introduction of modern teaching and learning practices. Renovations of Variku School will be done by autumn and students of Annelinna Gymnasium will be happy to find themselves in a brand-new and renewed building come 2020.
According to mayor Klaas “…school buildings are being completely redesigned because modern teaching methods require different spatial programs. In a reconstructed schoolhouse, students will also benefit from a modern open learning environment, which will certainly inspire both students and teachers”
Annelinna Gymnasium will boast an expanded building with reconstructed classrooms, a spacious lobby, a library, art and technology equipment, sports halls as well as a completely redesigned outdoor space. The U-shaped school building will be surrounded by areas befitting all sorts of sporting activities – basketball and football fields, bicycle ramps, an outdoor gym and even a parachute field.
The total cost of the Gymnasium’s renovation is around 10 million euros. Work is expected to conclude by July 2020, when the process of furnishing the building will begin.
