Sibiu begins work on the new age of its mobility plan

The city’s strategy for the 2021-2030 period will promote the use of alternative forms of transport and will allow the city to become greener

Improving urban mobility is a priority at the local level, so that, in the next period, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of the Municipality of Sibiu made in 2017 will be updated to meet current travel needs. The update of this plan will be made within the project "Smart Strategy based on Integration and Urbanization SMART - SIBIU SMART", funded by European funds under the Operational Program Administrative Capacity, through which the City of Sibiu will update the Urban Development Strategy of Sibiu.

Acting on something vital for citizens

"We are starting to work on this document in order to establish a coherent development strategy. I signed the contract with SC Foreign Investment Projects Consulting SRL Bucharest, having as subcontractor the Dutch company MobyCon BV. In the next 6 months, they will carry out field studies, public consultations and will design the new Mobility Plan. Specifically, we are looking for solutions to improve the mobility of the inhabitants, whether it is about transport by car, walking, cycling or public transport. It is important to mention that we will also consider improving the connections with the neighbouring localities," explained Astrid Fodor, mayor of Sibiu.

Sibiu City Hall has established the following main parameters for updating the Mobility Plan:

In terms of public transport:

  • Increasing the attractiveness and improving the accessibility and ease of use of public transport
  • Improving the availability of public transport routes and stops so that the maximum distance to a public transport station is reasonable and within a maximum of 10-15 minutes, including the information system for passengers in both Stations, as well as in transport vehicles
  • Analysis of routes dedicated to public transport to increase the frequency of buses, especially during peak hours
  • Introduction of peri-urban rail transport to ensure faster connectivity with the industrial area and analysis of public transport routes in terms of connection with the route of the future peri-urban train
  • Improving public transport connections between railway stations, bus stations and areas of public interest, such as residential, tourist and business areas with the city centre
  • Facilitating the use of public transport for people with reduced mobility

For the use of bikes:

  • Development of the network dedicated to bicycles
  • Increasing the level of safety of bicycle paths

And for pedestrian movement:

  • Development of pedestrian areas by creating an integrated network of pedestrian routes covering the entire city, paying special attention to routes to/from schools, parks and important tourist and cultural points of interest, office centres, shopping centres and public institutions
  • Increasing the mobility of people with physical disabilities by creating an adapted infrastructure

Improvements for travel by car are also envisioned and are meant to reduce travel time and congestions, thereby further limiting the vehicles’ environmental impact.
