Sintra municipality invests EUR 7 million in renovation of schools

This is only the beginning of a large-scale attempt to reinvigorate Sintra’s public education system

Basílio Horta, mayor of Sintra, and Alexandra Leitão, Secretary of State for Education, signed a joint protocol for collaboration aimed at improving Sintra’s public education. 7.4 million euros are planned to be invested in the renovation, rehabilitation, requalification and modernisation of 16 local schools, covering more than 13 thousand students.  The municipality will allocate 3.8 million of the funding from its own budget and the rest will be supplied by the central authorities. The plan is for the total amount to be transferred by 2021.

The president of Sintra’s city council stated that the improvement of local public education has been a priority of the administration since day one – not by building new schools but by improving old ones. So far plans have been drawn up for the investment of 24 million euros. The local and the central governments share the goal of creating a joint long-term strategy aimed at the reintegration and recovery of schools in the region.

According to Alexandra Leitão, the whole project is a part of a larger decentralization plan. The incumbent administration has made it one of its priorities to showcase all the positive aspects of giving more autonomy to municipalities.
