Slovakia ready for expansion of major cycling route

The longest stretch of the 100-km long path will be financed by the Integrated Regional Operational Programme

Citizens of Slovakia will be happy to learn that the 100-km long cycling path connecting Nové Mesto nad Váhom and Trencin will soon be getting a major upgrade. Thanks to funding provided by the Integrated Regional Operational Programme, a 21-km stretch will soon begin construction.

The new section will establish a cycling route and link between Trnava, Trencin and Zilina and is set to play a crucial role in Slovakia’s cycling infrastructure.

Clearing hurdles and working on the future

Work on the path is now ready to begin after the contractors managed to secure all the necessary planning and building permits and received approval for a non-repayable financial contribution. 

The construction of the new stretch of the hundred-kilometre long path will cost a total of 4.38 million euros, all of which will be provided by the European Union.

Following the route’s completion, cyclists will be able to comfortably traverse the Slovakian landscape – having a direct link between Horní Streda and the town of Trenčín. Furthermore, now there will be a total of 35 kilometres of cycling paths available to citizens, tourists and visitors.

The first stage of the massive project was completed way back in 2018 – a 13.4 km. stretch between Horni Streda and Nove Mesto nad Vahom.

Now that the vital connection is finally set to be established, authorities are looking to further improve what’s on offer. The cycling path connecting Nove Mesto nad Vahom and Trencin will soon be equipped with resting areas, shelters and all other kinds of necessary facilities that might come in handy to travellers.

Cities and authorities across Slovakia have identified cycling as the way to go to alleviate traffic problems and reduce their carbon footprints. Nitra and Bratislava have been at the forefront of investing in the construction of bike paths as a way to promote alternatives to car traffic.
