Sofia to re-introduce masks amid a midsummer Covid-wave

After a few months with no health restrictions, authorities are cautious to go toward harsh measures

Today, regional health authorities in Sofia announced that masks will be re-introduced in healthcare establishments, pharmacies and certain social service centres. Furthermore, strict Covid-monitoring measures will be implemented in kindergartens, as well as social centres.

The announcement came days after Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev said that the government’s action plan does not feature mass closure of restaurants or even a reintroduction of the green certificate at least until the end of summer.

Bracing for the summer peak

According to most recent data, Bulgaria is bracing for a summer Covid-peak, similar to the rest of Europe. Authorities report 2,200 new cases in the last 24 hours alone. At the same time, fewer and fewer people need hospital treatment, which makes the healthcare situation quite manageable.

Outgoing Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said that the data shows that people can have a calm summer. At the same time, Kunchev explained that the current Covid-variant is much milder and people recover within five to six days. The wave in Bulgaria is expected to peak in August, while the most affected regions are the capital of Sofia and the two regions by the Black Sea – Burgas and Varna.

Measures in Sofia

Regional health authorities have reintroduced face masks in healthcare centres, pharmacies and certain social service locations, starting 19 July 2022. The new rules also call for the reintroduction of social distancing and regular disinfection.

Kindergartens and child services, on the other hand, will be subject to a strict vetting process, where kids and personnel with Covid and flu-like symptoms will not be allowed to attend. Additionally, the regulations will be in effect for 30 days, however, they can be changed if the situation develops.
