Hungry people who cannot be vaccinated can also buy a sausage, with all the proceeds being donated to the children’s home in the city

The city of Sonneberg in Germany announced it will give out free bratwursts to everyone who took the Covid vaccine on Friday, 27 August. This is the second edition of their shots for sausages campaign with the first one premiering in July.

A bratwurst stand will greet people on their way out of the main vaccination centre in Koeppel Strasse and everyone who got vaccinated that day will be eligible for a free sausage.

The stand will also be open to people who cannot get the shot and are feeling a little peckish; however, they will have to buy their sausages. Everything the bratwurst stand earns will be donated to the children’s home in Sonneberg.

Shots for sausages

One of the biggest upsides of the bratwurst campaign is that people will not need prior registration for the vaccine. Instead, according to local authorities, all they will need is their ID, health insurance document and their vaccination book, if available. Inside, citizens will be able to choose between the BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

This is the second edition of the campaign with the first one premiering on 30 July to great success. Back then, health authorities registered 434 people passing through the vaccination centre. This was a significant increase compared to the 140 people per day they usually inoculated. According to health authorities, people came from all over Thuringia to get their shot and sausage in Sonneberg.

Local authorities plan similar campaigns in the future. One example is the Bad Salzungen station festival on 4 September, where the first 300 people to get vaccinated will receive a free bratwurst.
