Ready to meet the objectives set by the Spanish government’s Hydrogen Roadmap
Earlier this week saw the launch of SHYNE (Spanish Hydrogen Network), which represents the largest consortium in the country dedicated to the production and promotion of renewable hydrogen. It consists of 22 large companies and 11 entities (such as associations and universities) with the goal of carrying out projects in 10 of the country’s autonomous regions.
SHYNE will also count on government support, as the Spanish Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen, who was present at the presentation announced that 1.5 billion euros will come from European funds. The total investment budget of the consortium has been reported to amount to some 3.23 billion euros.
Energy giant Repsol leads this consortium together with six companies, each of which is a benchmark in its sector −Alsa, Bosch, CELSA Group, Enagás, Scania and Talgo. They will act as promoters of the initiative. The remaining 26 partners, associations, public and private companies, technology centres and universities, will assume the role of project collaborators.
Among the stated objectives of the consortium is the ambition to reach an installed capacity of 500 MW in 2025 and 2 GW in 2030, which would be half of the objective set in the Hydrogen Roadmap published by the Government of Spain.
“Green hydrogen is going to change the paradigm of the new energy model and for this reason, our doors will always be open to you”, said the Secretary of State for Energy in her greeting to all the representatives of the consortium.
SHYNE is seen as a powerful boost to the Spanish economy with the expected creation of 13,000 new jobs.
Already, consortium members are working to connect large regional hydrogen initiatives, such as the Basque Region Hydrogen Corridor, the Hydrogen Valley of the Region of Catalonia and the Hydrogen Valley of the Region of Murcia.
In addition to connecting existing hubs, SHYNE wants to promote the creation of two new innovation hubs in the regions of Castile-La Macha and Madrid. The Spanish capital will also host a knowledge management centre, which will coordinate the transversal actions and promote Spanish tech centres in Europe.
