Tartu invests further in culture and education

The city is revising its budget following victory in the European Capital of Culture competition

The local government of the Estonian city of Tartu has submitted a draft supplementary budget for 2019, which includes additional expenses totalling at 3.1 million euros. The draft was submitted a few days after the city won its bid for European Capital of Culture 2024. The 3.1 million euros will be spent mostly on culture and education – with 37% going to the former and 29% to the latter. The rest will be allocated towards project which improve the active leisure and educational opportunities for residents.

The mayor of Tartu, Urmas Klaas, has explicitly stated that the money going towards the field of culture is entirely linked to the city’s win in the European Capital of Culture competition. When it comes to specifics the allocated funding will be used on an information campaign on the nature, objectives and opportunities which the title of European Capital of Culture entails. Furthermore, residents will be happy to learn that some streets and intersections will undergo significant upgrade efforts in the near future. Additionally, thanks to the funding, a new disc golf park will be created in the city.

The supplementary funding will drive up Tartu’s budget to a total of 207.5 million euros.
