La ciudad gallega de Lugo ha dedicado una parte de su área a un proyecto que pretende convertir un polígono antiguamente industrial en un distrito urbano de futuro teniendo en cuenta las nuevas pautas y estándares que hacen hincapié en la sostenibilidad en la construcción, gestión, mantenimiento, vivienda y trabajando allí. El nombre del proyecto es LIFE Lugo + Biodinámico, refiriéndose a una relación flexible con el entorno medioambiental y cuidado en el diseño.
La iniciativa, que cuenta con la colaboración y la financiación provenientes del Ayuntamiento local, así como de la Unión Europea y el mundo académico (las Universidades de Santiago de Compostela y la Politécnica de Madrid están a bordo), se inspira no solo en el impulso general hacia el 'verde '', sino también por las necesidades y deficiencias creadas a raíz de la crisis pandémica, como la necesidad de más espacio a pesar del aislamiento social.
Los desarrolladores de proyectos esperan tomar las mejores características de la naturaleza, la vida rural y urbana y combinarlas en un nuevo concepto de vecindario, al que han llamado "multi-ecológico". Se planea que la parte residencial incluya 1200 viviendas y una baja densidad de población, de ahí el ambiente rural. El componente de naturaleza proviene del compromiso con la flora local, como la restauración de humedales en las periferias y la plantación de árboles nativos, como cerezos, fresnos, robles y praderas.
El papel de los árboles es fundamental también como material de construcción. Se trata de un guiño y apoyo a la industria maderera gallega, pero también es una decisión que surge de la racionalidad medioambiental, ya que los edificios de madera son más eficientes energéticamente que los de hormigón o acero.
La pieza central del nuevo barrio será el edificio Impulso Verde, que combinará las funciones administrativas municipales con oficinas comerciales y jardines urbanos, convirtiéndolo en una especie de centro comunitario polivalente. Su construcción ya está en marcha y su aspecto proyectado se puede ver en las imágenes de arriba.
