Desde febrero, Málaga ha tenido una nueva y valiosa incorporación a su flota de transporte público: un autobús eléctrico autónomo y de tamaño grande, el primero de este tipo en Europa. Si bien es cierto que Copenhague y Hamburgo están realizando pruebas con autobuses sin conductor, son minibuses de 8 asientos y operan en perímetros más pequeños.
El vehículo en Málaga tiene 12 metros de largo con una capacidad de 60 asientos y está dando servicio a un circuito de 8 kilómetros alrededor de la ciudad del sur de España. Aunque está impulsado por inteligencia artificial utilizando un sistema de navegación predeterminado, técnicamente no podemos llamarlo un autobús sin conductor, por el momento.
El motivo es que la legislación española actual no permite que los vehículos se muevan sin la presencia de un operador humano en su interior. Por eso, el autobús todavía tiene un conductor, pero él está allí solo para tomar el control si las circunstancias de emergencia requieren tal acción; fuera de tales eventualidades, no conduce el vehículo.
El proyecto en sí consta de varios socios que se unieron para probarlo y hacerlo realidad. Surge del programa piloto AutoMost, que se desarrolló entre noviembre de 2017 y octubre de 2020 y fue financiado por el gobierno español a través del Centro de Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial por una suma de 9 millones de euros.
El objetivo era desarrollar un sistema de conducción y navegación inteligente que permitiera la automatización de los vehículos y el aumento de la sostenibilidad y la seguridad en las vías urbanas. Más específicamente, se trataba de la implementación de sistemas de control compartido (Dual-Mode) que permiten a los vehículos automatizados operar de manera más eficiente en un contexto de infraestructuras inteligentes.
Ademas, el primer servicio de autobuses sin conductor del mundo también se lanzó el mes pasado en Singapur.
