The metro network in Bucharest expands with one new station

It will be located on the north-south subway line Pipera - Berceni

The Romanian capital Bucharest is the sixth largest city in Europe in terms of total population. The 2.4 million residents and numerous visitors of the city are able to use the services of the metro. The Bucharest Metro is well integrated with the bus system of the city and currently provides daily service to over 800 thousand passengers.

Up until now the metro has 5 lines and spanning a total of 71.5 kilometers. There are plans to expand the system with one route already under construction and another one in the preliminary planning stages. This will add 30 kilometers to the existing metro system.

M2 line Pipera - Berceni

On 1st October the Romanian Transport Ministry, the Bucharest subway network operator Metrorex and Bucharest’s District 4 City Hall have signed an agreement for the construction of a new subway station on the north-south subway line - M2 line Pipera - Berceni.

The second line was opened in 1986 and was completed in 1987 with the addition of the northern section. This route runs on a north-south alignment for 18.7 kilometres. In fact, the new project entails the southward expansion of the existing line by the use of already established railing, which are scheduled for an upgrade.

Now, the southern part of Bucharest is enjoying more and more residential projects, which while currently in progress lack sorely needed support infrastructure. According to City Hall anouncment, the new subway station will be built above ground and will be located between the Berceni subway station and Bucharest belt road.

The M2 subway line will be a subject to a future expansion and upgrade project aimed at developing it northward, where a large number of office buildings are located. Follow our news for future projects in Bucharest in the Development section.
