Over 130 corona-proof, social-distancing performances will guarantee a spectacular leisure time for everyone staying in Leuven this summer. At least this is what local authorities in the Flemish city claim, announcing that the cultural programme will go ahead as scheduled, despite the presence of the coronavirus.
Upon announcing the good news, Mayor of Leuven, Mohamed Ridouani explained that the number of new Covid-19 infections in the city remains limited, thanks to the commitment of everyone. Hence, the concerts and performances that his team and cultural organisations have worked on can take place as planned.
Respecting a 1.5-metre social distancing, the first sessions will start on Thursday 13 August and will run until Sunday 30 August. The programme comprises over 130 performances at 11 outdoor locations with music, dance, theatre, movies and circus.
Well-known names such as Milow, Gabriel Rios, Paul Michiels and Sergio are worth mentioning. Furthermore, there is also a great program for children, including Captain Winokio, Zonzo Compagnie and Speelhal5. Leuven Plage at HAL 5 and the Groten Hof in the city park can be visited continuously.
Alderman of Culture and Events, Denise Vandevoort explained that the events were conceived with a cap on the number of spectators which necessitated the choice of outdoor locations with plentiful space. She assured that all the shows will fully adhere to the Belgian safety requirements.
For example, visitors will be guided to a seat that is placed at no less than 1.5 meters away from others and will be served at their table. Everyone, from crew to audience, will wear a face mask during the entire performance. Sanitizing gel will be provided for regular hand disinfection and QR codes or forms will help register people.
Finally, resuming the cultural programme in Leuven means that the cultural sector can take a breath and still save a part of the summer season. “With this festival, we invest more than 500 000 euros in a sector that absolutely needs it. There are a lot of Leuven artists on our stages and we work together with many Leuven partners” concluded Vandevoort, as quoted on the municipal website.
