Venice Carnival intends to be as attention-grabbing as ever

This year, people can peek behind the scenes and participate from the comfort of their homes

This past weekend saw the start of the traditional Venice Carnival. At least, that is the under an unusual digital format which will try to recreate the beauty and pageantry of the costumes without compromising the health and safety of the participants.

The programme designed by the organizers is meant to unfold in two parts, the first of which took place 6-7 February and the second will take place from 11 to 16 February, both of them on the screen. The 2021 Carnival has its ‘headquarters’ at the Ca’ Vendramin Calergi Palace, overlooking the Canale Grande, from where live broadcasts will be televised on the official website as well on Televenezia TV channel between 5 and 6:30 pm.

Organizers promise to keep the traditions that are part of the Carnival

This year, the format also allows viewers to have a more in-depth look into the workings of the event, by having the chance to watch 40 short videos specially produced to present the artisans, artists, designers, as well as the places, such as ateliers and workshops. It is a nod of appreciation to the people who make the magic possible every year.

"We also wanted to underline in this 'unpublished' edition of the Carnival, the fundamental role of craft activities for the preservation of the identity of Venice, enhancing their role of interpreters of city traditions. The fact remains that their function is not only linked to Carnival but strictly connected to preserving the original fabric of the city which, after this difficult year of emergency, awaits to fully regain its spaces and its position as a welcoming city, open to the world,” explained Giovanni Giusto, who heads the Protection of Traditions Department in Venice.

The organizers have also made sure that viewers can also become active participants in the celebration with the organization of a variety of workshops, performances and interactive stories for young and old.

One of the most awaited traditions is the contest for the Most Beautiful Mask and this year will be no exception. This actually refers to the whole costume and those who wish to enter the contest are urged to do so by sending a photo and a brief description of their costume by registering on the official website by 10 February.

A jury will select the finalists and then an official virtual parade will take place live on 14 February, starting at 5:15 pm. The winner will be a guest of honour at the 2022 edition, hopefully, this time in person.
