The Season of Classic Films with free screenings has started. This summer, those who live or travel within the territory of one of the thirteen participating countries, will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the most beloved movies of the past decades for free. In addition, the screenings will take place in some of the most interesting cultural heritage venues in various cities and towns. Having started this Saturday, the initiative will last till the end of September 2019. Its ultimate goals: to underline the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the continent, to build stronger communities around culture, film and heritage.

The format varies depending on the country and the city – the screenings may thus take place during festivals, alongside concerts, debates and other social events. Venues include Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki (Greece), the Kilkenny Castle in Ireland or the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, Italy.

It is estimated that more than 15,000 persons will enjoy this unique cultural experience. The Season of Classic Films is organised in the framework of larger restoration and digitization of cultural heritage films initiative, under the Creative Europe MEDIA programme. It took place for the first time in 2018 as a follow-up to the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage.
