Las autoridades de Alcalá de Guadaíra (España) han comenzado a trabajar en un proyecto piloto para la implementación de un sistema de retención de toallitas y papeles que se vierten por los inodoros domésticos y terminan en el río Guadaíra. Los retenedores, que entrarán en funcionamiento en poco más de 10 semanas, evitarán la acumulación de este material contaminante, altamente perjudicial para el ecosistema local.
A diferencia del papel higiénico, la mayoría de las toallitas húmedas no se disuelven en el agua. No están diseñados para ir al baño, pero es un hábito común tirarlos allí, en lugar de tirarlos al cubo de la basura. En épocas de fuertes lluvias, el sistema de saneamiento de la red libera el excedente de agua de lluvia a los aliviaderos que desembocan en el canal. Sin embargo, cuando estos están obstruidos por material no disuelto, se crean serios problemas y el potencial de inundaciones.
El Ayuntamiento acomete periódicamente la limpieza de las riberas de los ríos en la zona del parque para eliminar los vertidos, incluido el de toallitas higiénicas. Esta vez, se decidió probar una solución más conveniente basada en la tecnología simple de peines y redes.
La intervención afectará a tres vertederos, con una dotación presupuestaria cercana a los 160.000 euros. En el aliviadero ubicado en el Cercadillos se instalará un sistema con doble filtro. Su primera sección estará formada por peines para retener las toallitas y papeles y una segunda de redes capturará los restos más finos que logren pasar por el primer nivel.
Mientras se instalan los sistemas de retención, el gobierno local también está llevando a cabo una campaña que tiene el lema de 'Toallitas en la papelera'. La iniciativa tiene como objetivo concienciar a la ciudadanía para que no tire este tipo de material por el inodoro.
