Northern Lights

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

It is now the perfect time to witness the magical display

Once the holidays are over and people have put away their decorations, it seems as though the winter months have nothing left to offer. In reality, this is far from the truth as it is now the perfect time to pack your bags, wear your warmest clothes and travel to the North.

Until early April, travellers have the chance to experience an unforgettable sight: the Northern Lights. Also known as Aurora Borealis, these natural light displays are in full swing during this time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

Although there is no guarantee that one will witness the dynamic light patterns, there are several places in Europe where one will have a good chance of seeing them.

Rovaniemi, Finland

Known as the Official Hometown of Santa Claus, it is not surprising that the remarkable light display can be observed in this magical place. According to Visit Rovaniemi, the natural phenomenon is generally visible on around 150 nights of the year.

Abisko, Sweden

Abisko, a village in northern Sweden, is one of the top destinations for travellers who wish to see the Northern Lights. While the best views of the Aurora Borealis are observed where the skies are darker, one can witness the natural light display from the village or even their hotel room window!

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland’s Reykjavik is renowned for its extraordinary light displays. As it offers numerous viewing spots and has low light pollution, this city is a popular tourist destination during this time of the year.

All three locations offer tours for those who wish to witness the Northern Lights. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that although the displays are most visible during this time of the year, there is no guarantee that you will see them – this is precisely what makes catching a glimpse of the natural phenomenon so special.
