The planned ice arena will feature two hockey fields, a skating rink, warm-up and figure skating choreography halls

Vilnius City Municipality has signed a contract with the winner of the tender for the architectural design of a state-of-the-art ice arena. The planned indoor winter sports complex will occupy a plot of 9500 sq. m. on Jotvingių Street in Naujininkai district, and will be jointly designed by UAB “Projektų rengimo centras” and UAB “Tiksl forma”.

Capital city short of winter sports facilities

“The development of sports infrastructure has been one of Vilnius' priorities for many years now - larger or smaller sports facilities are constantly sprouting in the city, but the ice arena will be a truly exceptional project. For some time now, we have felt that the capital is lacking in winter sports facilities. The new, modern ice rink will in the first place contribute to the expansion of the range of non-formal educational opportunities and the development of highly skilled athletes, and in the long run - to the promotion of hockey, figure skating and ice skating in the country,” said Valdas Benkunskas, Vilnius City Vice Mayor for Sports, quoted by Vilnius.lt.

The arena can accommodate about 100 athletes at a time and will feature two hockey fields – one of them dedicated to hockey training, and the other adaptable for figure skating as well. The latter will have a spectator stand, so, apart from serving as a training site, it can host competitions. The arena will also house a skating rink and warm-up and figure skating choreography halls.

Designers will supervise construction

The winners of the tender will have to prepare a technical construction project which should be completed by 2022, create an information model of the building and obtain a construction permit. The designers will also supervise the construction works from start to finish. The total value of the signed contract is EUR 330 000.
