A green space with a mission

On 11 March, the official website of Jurmala reported that the construction of a new park in the Kauguri area is set to begin in spring. It will be spread over 3.8 hectares and will provide residents of the Latvian city with new opportunities for leisure, sports and recreation. Best of all, however, is the fact that the new green space will be crowned with a youth house – a centre which will be sort of a hub for encouraging youth initiative, carried out by a local organization that specializes in that sphere.

Multifunctionality emphasizes the nature of the planned park

The park, whose building has been tasked to Merks, a multinational construction company, will feature all the things one would expect from a multifunctional urban green space. The idea is to provide residents with a variety of options on how to spend their free time and to induce them to opt for an active lifestyle.

Among the reported facilities there will be a picnic area, a children’s playground, a basketball court, outdoor fitness space, an ice rink and a place for fairs and exhibitions.

In the centre of the park, there will be a building that will house the Jurmala Youth Initiative Center, which will provide educational and practical courses aimed at young people. The facility will have music and photography studios, as well as a multipurpose hall. These spaces will be specifically utilized to promote the skills and interest among the city’s youth so they can find their vocation in life, especially if it relates to catering, professional and scientific services.

The second floor of the building will be an outdoor terrace which will reportedly be used for open-air cinema events. Part of the youth house will also be available to local businesses which provide catering or recreational services in the interest of youth.

The estimated cost of the project is 9.64 million euros, a part of which will be financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The estimated completion time is 14 months.
