For the first time, Bucharest was mentioned in documents in 1459. Then the town became the residence of the famous Wallachian ruler Vlad III the Impaler. During the reign of subsequent rulers, Bucharest was turned into a royal summer residence. In 1698 the city was declared a permanent location of the Wallachian Royal Court. In the next 200 years, several natural disasters have occurred, causing damage to the city, including a plague epidemic. The Habsburgs and the Russian Empire have several times conquered the city, with the city coming under the control of Russian administration. In March 1847, after an attack by an Austrian garrison, over a third of the city was devastated by fires. Over 2,000 buildings were destroyed. In 1862 Bucharest became the capital of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, and in 1881 the Kingdom of Romania. During the First World War, the capital moved temporarily to the city of Iași, and after the war it was returned to Bucharest. For 200 years, the city was constantly growing and the population increasing.

Bucharest is the capital and the largest city in Romania, as well as the cultural, financial and industrial center of the country. It is located in the southeast, less than 60 km from the banks of the Danube River and the Bulgarian border. Nearly 2 million people comprise the population of the capital today, and the area of ​​the city is 228sq.km. The capital is divided into 6 major districts located radially so that each one includes a part of the center. Each sector is run by a local mayor, elected by the residents of the area for a period of 4 years.

Bucharest is the center of the Romanian economy, with a major share of it being the industry and the service sector, which have grown significantly over the past ten years. The construction sector is also a major factor in the development of the economy since 2000. There are both modern residential and multi-storey office buildings. Bucharest is also the largest Romanian information technology and communications center.

In Bucharest there are many tourist destinations that are visited by thousands of tourists each year. Among the most famous are the building of the Romanian Parliament, a magnificent and grandiose edifice in the center of the city, the Romanian Athenaeum, a great concert hall, as well as many museums and galleries. The most visited are the Museum of Art from Romania, Europe and Asia, the Ethnographic Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.
