Cohesion Alliance wants to emphasise the importance of regions in decision-making

Member States need the local authorities in order to prepare better recovery plans

Yesterday, 24 March 2021, the #CohesionAlliance called on Member States to collaborate with local and regional governments to prepare post-Covid recovery plans. The #CohesionAlliance aims to create a new declaration that includes all stakeholders and organisations at the European, global, regional, and local levels, including governments, enterprises, and civil society.

Since local and regional governments have been at the forefront of the health crisis, they play a critical role in providing an equitable, safe, and resilient recovery across Europe. Local and state governments are responsible for one-third of EU public spending and half of EU public investment.

However, as Member States formulate their national recovery strategies, it has become apparent that regions, towns, and municipalities, as well as their socioeconomic partners, are not being meaningfully included in the planning process in many countries. If these stakeholders are not taken into account, they would remain behind in the period of recovery.

Member States must consider local and regional authorities when decisions are made

The Next Generation EU is a stabilisation instrument, also known as the Recovery Plan for Europe, and it plays an important role in the European Union on all levels. The EU will support these plans by releasing 750 billion euros on the financial market through grants and loans to resolve the COVID-19 crisis's implications. In order to do that, the EU needs Member States to ratify the decision on national resources and this should be made as soon as possible.

Finally, to deliver a fully European vaccination programme, European countries and regions must again work together and try to avoid any inequalities between the different regions. The Cohesion Alliance warned EU officials about the dangers of on-the-ground competition for vaccines. Strong cooperation between the EU, regional, and national governments will ensure that all citizens' needs and objectives are fulfilled, and no region is left behind.
