Olympic swimming complex opens in Otopeni, Romania

Six pools intended for swimming and leisure activities

The Romanian city of Otopeni inaugurated an Olympic swimming complex this week in the presence of Cseke Attila, Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration.

The complex in Otopeni has a capacity of 2,797 seats for spectators, locker rooms for athletes, gyms, methodical rooms, saunas, doctor's office, conference room, press booths and a training room for high jump athletes. The cost of the works was 34 million euros.

Swimming pools for professionals and for leisure

"I am happy to announce today the inauguration of the Otopeni Olympic Swimming Complex. After a blockage for several years, the sports complex can finally be opened. I am confident that, as long as the vaccination campaign will continue at the current pace, training and competitions will resume in the normal regime,” shared minister Cseke Attila.

What does the Otopeni Olympic Swimming Complex include?

  • an Olympic swimming pool (25 x 51.25 m, with variable depth);
  • an Olympic jumping pool (21 x 25 m, with variable depth 3.5-5 m);
  • a training pool (15 x 25 m, with variable depth H = 1.36-1.81 m);
  • an initiation and recovery basin (7 x 12 m, with a depth of 1.2 m);
  • an initiation and recovery basin (6 x 12 m, with a depth of 1.2 m);
  • a semi-circular initiation and recovery basin (5 x 9.80 m, 0.6 m deep).

The complex has six pools, of varying lengths: one of which is dedicated to the needs of Olympic swimmers, one is meant for diving jumps, and three are intended for relaxation and recovery. Some of these will be able to be used by the public when not used for competitions or training. The Romanian Federation of Swimming and Pentathlon, in 2022 and 2023, plans to organise the European Championships for swimming, water jumps, and those for juniors and seniors.
