Zagreb presents plan for the future of Kino Europa

Kino Europa is one of Zagreb’s most famous cultural landmarks and the local government wants to promote it even further

At a press conference held earlier this week, the mayor of the Croatian capital of Zagreb Milan Bandic laid out his government’s vision for the future of Kino Europa (Cinema Europe) – a famous landmark that authorities want to return to its former glory.

Supporting vital cultural venues and heritage

Kino Europa is the oldest cinema in Zagreb and as such occupies a special and central place in the cultural life of the city. Mayor Bandić emphasized that the cult Kino Europa has four important features for the Croatian capital. "Kino Europa is the oldest cinema in Zagreb, it is one of the oldest centers of cultural life in the city of Zagreb, it is a protected cultural asset and the embodiment of a modern cultural institution," he stated during the press conference.

KIC director Petar Bujas explained that they plan to launch interdisciplinary projects that will valorize the rich history not only of the cinema itself but also of Croatian cinema heritage. "The main idea is to form an artistic council of experts from the world of film, who would equally participate in the creation of the film program. We also plan to include world-renowned experts in the events! There will also be educational programs that will promote true film values, and the program will follow current international, European, regional and domestic trends! '', Concluded Bujas.

The cinema’s new program will, to a greater extent than before, enable the screening of films that would not otherwise experience commercial distribution, as well as the screening of films of neglected genres (documentary, experimental, short). Customer interest will be the main measure of the project’s success as the municipality aims to ensure the venue’s financial stability and protect it from adverse market factors that could otherwise prove its undoing.
