Chempark Dormagen will build the world's largest plant for storing green hydrogen
Today, the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia has released a statement that it will make new investments in the hydrogen economy. The world's largest plant for storing green hydrogen in liquid organic carrier oils (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier, LOHC) is being built at Chempark Dormagen.
The project will cost 20 million euros, of which the state government will invest nine million euros.
Dr. Daniel Teichmann, founder and CEO of Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies outlined the plant capacity which will have storage for about 1,800 tonnes of hydrogen per year.
Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy of the State North Rhine-Westphalia stated: “It is a good example of how we can supply our business and industrial location with green hydrogen in the future. Besides, it forms the basis for the creation of future-oriented jobs and supports the Rhenish River in becoming the leading hydrogen location. LOHC technology offers a promising perspective to transport and trade hydrogen in large quantities worldwide. That is why innovative transport and storage technologies are extremely important."
For the state government, hydrogen is a key element in achieving climate protection goals and modernising the economic and energy location of North Rhine-Westphalia. Hydrogen can be used in industry to produce steel, glass or fertiliser in a climate-neutral way.
The first bus fleets are already operating with hydrogen in the transport sector. The state government is working hard to increase the market for hydrogen stations and trucks with hydrogen and is encouraging municipalities and regions to build their hydrogen infrastructure.
Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for 2023 and will be used mostly in the mobility and industrial sectors.
