A sleek way to mark its 175th anniversary
On 16 November, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, as the opera house of Barcelona is known, launched Liceu+, its ambitious audiovisual content streaming platform, which will be available for free with registration. The venture into the digital sphere is an important part of the 175th-anniversary celebrations of the cultural institution.
Developed by the MEDIAPRO Group, the main objective of Liceu+ is to provide content accessible to all and thereby contribute to making opera more available, in addition to complementing the experience of live opera by offering specific content from the season’s performances on demand, together with in-depth interviews, podcasts, social and educational projects, among other features.
Liceu+ was designed in accordance with the very latest in digital trends, taking into account the specificities of the world of opera, with intuitive navigation to provide users with personalized content according to each individual’s taste. The platform also provides users with a huge variety of content in multiple formats, from direct video streams to VOD, podcasts, etc. Liceu+ is accessible from any web browser (PC, tablet, smartphone) and is scheduled to launch applications for mobile devices shortly.
The streaming platform is available in Catalan, Spanish and English, with subtitles also available in these three languages, apart from the original language in which they are recorded. As for the podcasts, these will be available in Catalan and Spanish.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu was also one of the first theatres in the world to start broadcasting live opera in cinemas – back in 2001, with La Traviata. This kind of cred only goes to show that trying out pioneering approaches is part of its DNA.
As part of the 175th-anniversary celebrations, the platform will also host a section to revisit some of the Liceu’s unique and historical moments. The 'Liceu Essentials' section, will feature a compilation of the most electrifying moments throughout the Gran Teatre’s history.
Liceu+ will also offer streaming broadcasts of other events held at the Theater, including conventions, training sessions, press conferences and even concerts and recitals, with an inaugural event on 21 November, where all those registered can enjoy the live performance by maestro Gustavo Dudamel with the Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Paris on stage at the Gran Teatre concert. The free event also marks Dudamel's first international concert as the new musical director of the Paris Opera and promises to feature a spectacular program combining pieces by Ravel, Mozart and Berlioz.
