In the last six months, the number of Ukrainians has risen to the point where they are now the third largest ethnic group in the city
Recently, the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistical Office (Statistik Berlin-Brandenburg) published data on the population of the city. As of June 2022, the German capital was home to 3,821,881 officially registered citizens.
According to their research, in the last six months, the number of people who were registered as living in Berlin rose by 46,400, compared to the end of 2021. 34,700 of them came from Ukraine, as Russia launched its invasion at the end of February.
The official statement from the Statistical Office points out that the population data shows an increase in foreigners and a decrease in Germans, in line with recent trends. Berlin, after all, is a huge population centre and a magnet for people looking for opportunities.
At the same time, the total number of foreigners living in Berlin is around 22.6%, which means that the German capital is far from cracking the top 10 of the most cosmopolitan cities in the European Union. That title has to go to Brussels, where over 60% of the population has been born outside of the country.
Nevertheless, Berlin’s demographics are shifting, as between January and June, the German population has fallen by 5,360 people, while foreigners have gone up by 51,761. Even without migration from Ukraine, the foreign population would have still gone up by 11,700 people.
Ukrainians are currently the fastest-growing ethnic group in the city, followed by Indians with 4,027 and Russians with 1,963 new arrivals. Due to people pushed out by the conflict, Ukrainians have now become the third largest ethnic group in the city, with 49,280 people. The first one is Turkish nationals, with 99, 421 people and Polish nationals with 53,664.
