8 of the top 10 highest-ranking cities are European
This month, Euromonitor International published its Top 100 City Destinations Index. With this publication, the market research company addresses the lack of extensive city-level data by conducting a comprehensive, multi-layered analysis of the world’s key and emerging city hubs.
To measure the attractiveness of cities, Euromonitor International compares 54 different metrics across 6 pillars for 100 destinations. These pillars are Economic and Business Performance, Tourism Performance, Tourism Infrastructure, Tourism Policy and Attractiveness, Health and Safety, and Sustainability.
According to the index, the vaccine rollout has resulted in overall positive development for the travel and tourism sectors of cities worldwide. While most urban areas have experienced a recovery in 2021, European cities lead the way.
Taking this point further, Europe has the highest number of cities featured in the index (39 of 100). What is more, 8 of the top 10 highest-ranking cities are also European.

As illustrated by the top 10 list, Paris has ranked at the top of the 2021 index. Explaining the reasons behind this, Euromonitor International writes that the city has the highest ranking in Tourism Performance and comes second in Tourist Policy and Infrastructure. Another explanation for the success of the French capital is the return of American and Asian tourists.
It is also important to highlight that both Germany and Spain have performed exceptionally well this year as each of the countries has two high-ranking cities in the top 10.
