El tono optimista se inspiró en el anuncio de que se pondrá en marcha un autobús de hidrógeno para transportar pasajeros en las carreteras del Corredor del Henares, el primer vehículo de este tipo en operar oficialmente en España.
Inicialmente y hasta el último trimestre del año, el autobús funcionará a modo de prueba, con la idea de que sea el pionero y precursor de lo que más adelante se convertirá en un medio de transporte generalizado. Se informó que el autobús será operado por ALSA, empresa de transporte que presta servicios de pasajeros regulares interurbanos y regionales en Madrid, así como en España.
El vehículo en cuestión es un autobús Caetano H2, de 12 metros de largo y equipado con piso bajo para mejor accesibilidad, tres puertas de doble acceso y capacidad para transportar 62 pasajeros, incluido un espacio para personas con movilidad reducida. Sin embargo, lo que lo hace interesante y único es lo que lo impulsará hacia adelante.
Una pila de combustible de hidrógeno alimentará el motor eléctrico, lo que le dará una clara ventaja sobre otros autobuses, tanto de las variedades de combustible tradicionales como alternativas. Está diseñado para no emitir dióxido de carbono a la atmósfera y solo vapores de agua, resultado del proceso en la celda de combustible de hidrógeno. También se informa que es prácticamente silencioso, lo que combinado con la característica anterior le otorga la distinción de un vehículo de "contaminación cero", lo que significa que no genera contaminación acústica ni de aire.
También se compara favorablemente con los autobuses eléctricos porque su batería proporciona un alcance más largo: 400 kilómetros con una sola carga. Y recargar la batería de la pila de combustible llevará el mismo tiempo que recargar un autobús eléctrico.
El Gobierno de Madrid informó que el Consorcio Regional de Transportes ya tiene el 28% de su flota reconvertida a vehículos de combustibles alternativos, funcionando con gas natural o energía eléctrica. Sin embargo, este nuevo vehículo, combinado con una prueba de autobús sin conductor que se ejecuta en el campus de Cantoblanco de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, está destinado a transformar por completo la idea de transporte y movilidad.
