London - the first National Park City

The target is making more than 50% of the city green by 2050

The mayor, Sadiq Khan wants London to be the first National Park City, with a target of making more than 50% of the city green by 2050. To help do this, he created the Greener City Fund. This includes:

  • Community Tree Planting and Green Space Grants: £3m to help Londoners plant trees and make the city greener. These community grants will be offered in several rounds. In the first round, £400k was awarded to 29 tree planting projects running from October 2017 – March 2018. Another £1.1m went to 55 green space projects happening in 2018.
  • Strategic green infrastructure projects: £3m to major projects that bring a range of environmental benefits. This includes £800k allocated to nine projects through the Good Growth Fund to increase greening of the built environment, and Green Capital grant funding of £2m that will support large-scale projects to be announced in 2018.
  • London’s urban forest: £3m to help create new woodlands; pilot new approaches to supporting tree planting in public space; improve data about London’s trees; and support London-wide projects.

By making London one of the greenest on earth, could improve air quality, conserve wildlife and develop a green infrastructure to benefit all Londoners.
