New meeting space with velodrome might soon adorn Leuven’s Brusselsestraat

It is meant as a temporary project, to be used prior to the construction of a new performance art building starts in 2024

A temporary art installation might soon bring more life to the Lower town of Leuven. For a transition period between the demolition of St. Peter's Hospital and the start of construction of a new building for performing arts in 2024, the authorities want to treat residents to a space for meeting, neighbourhood-oriented activities, cycling and events.

Turning unused public space into an attractive meeting area

The Flemish city of Leuven is in need of new places where large productions could take place; where local associations and cultural associations could organise their activities. Such meeting space could also boost trade in the respective part of the city.

For this purpose, the authorities decided to use the vacant space of the St. Peter's Hospital, which is set for demolition in June, in combination with the nearby Romanesque Gate and the Predikheren Church and turn it into a new culture spot.

Alderman for Spatial Planning and Immovable Heritage Carl Devlies explained that they “dream of a velodrome, completely in the spirit of the Road World Championships that will take over our city in September” So, to realise this project Leuven has applied for a temporary environmental permit and is expecting a decision within the next 30 days.

The place for meetings and cultural activities will be in line with the philosophy of the future performing arts building, which is to be built in 2024. Alderman for culture, tourism and events Denise Vandevoort explained that an art installation of the velodrome type will be both beautiful and welcoming for various sorts of collective activities.

“As soon as the installation has been licensed, we will give the project more shape and we could further communicate about it. As a first step, we will look together with the neighbourhood and the leisure services of the city to see what is possible. We plan to start this spring.”, she further clarified.
