New social housing concept in Vienna to help single parents

New social housing concept in Vienna to help single parents

The city’s development in Wolfganggasse will be the flagship project of IBA Wien 2022

Today, authorities in Vienna announced that next week they will start allocating new social housing apartments. The housing project, located on the site of the former ‘Wolfganggasse’ depot in Vienna-Meidling, is in its final stages of construction.

Local authorities will implement a new special single parent scheme that offers apartments with a special layout for applicants. When finished, it will have more than 100 apartments, housing around 2,000 people.

Future concepts for social housing

Most of the 105 apartments are sized between 46 and 55 square metres and each one of them is equipped with a balcony. They also have bike racks with total storage space for 230 bicycles, buggy storage facilities on every floor and underground parking for 63 cars.

At the same time, nearly half of all units have been specifically designed to accommodate single parents. The apartments have a unique layout, offering a bedroom, living room and playroom. This is the first time housing authorities in Vienna will implement the single parents programme and this is its main offer.

Furthermore, the ‘Wolfganggasse’ development will be the flagship project at the International Building Exhibition 2022 in the city. It will focus on innovations in the social housing sector and it will take place from 23 June to 18 November.

Full range of amenities

The development will be equipped with a large communal terrace where people will have the opportunity to meet and interact. This would help residents to form a more resilient community, as the building will offer social housing to single-person households, families, couples and the elderly.

Furthermore, authorities have said that a kindergarten will be set up in the area, as well as a senior’s club, hairdressing salon, a cafeteria, an apprentices' hostel and workshops for vocational training.
