Stockholm tests new on-demand mobility service

It will be in effect for three months

The Swedish capital of Stockholm and the most densely populated urban area in the Nordic countries continues to find and implement different innovative transport approaches. The latest such example is a new on-demand mobility service.

The providers of the new mobility service

This new service will be in effect for only three months and will allow for the making of an assessment of the benefits in the Stockholm area. The provider of the new mobility service is Shotl, the on-demand shuttle company that matches passenger destinations, alongside Nobina technology.

Nobina is known as the largest transport service provider in the Nordic region, with its mobility arm - Nobina Technology, acting as a laboratory for the development of shared mobility solutions.

To try the new service you have to use the Shotl passenger app. In real-time the app sources requests from passengers, as well as the driver app which provides data and information for the driver to navigate through the pick-up and drop-off locations in accordance with the demand.

The process of implementation

Stockholm municipality announced that the trial began in September 2019 and initially will be tested as a proof of concept. In the initial phase will be used only two vehicles to provide services across an area of 4.31km2 with population of 3,000 in Stockholm.

During the proof of concept phase relevant data like for example origin/destination matrices, walking distances from bus stops, kilometres travelled by both vehicles, occupancy levels, vehicle waiting times and trip durations will be collected.

Both of the companies, Shotl and Nobina, will then assess the concept in relation to both statistics and key performance data indicators. This evaluation process will enable them to decide whether to implement the service over a long-term period.
