The pilot route of an aerial cableway in Stuttgart from Vaihingen to Möhringen is currently being looked at in-depth by the city’s local government. The committee for urban development and technology decided on beginning the examination on January 19th which kickstarted an investigation that will lead to a benefit-cost assessment of the potential route.
In the past two years, several corridors for a cable car route in Stuttgart have been examined. The evaluation of the routes showed that a cable car route from Vaihingen to Möhringen has the greatest potential for implementation. The planned route should lead from the VAI campus, the former IBM site, via the Vaihingen train station to the eastern border of the Vaihingen / Möhringen synergy park.
The implementation should take place in combination with several urban developments. This includes the dynamic development of the synergy park itself, the development of the VAI campus as a project for the IBA 2027 and the further development of the Vaihingen train station as a future regional train station as a multimodal mobility focus. In addition, the connection of the cable car to a Park & Ride location in the area of the A8 is to be included in the further investigation.
With the continuation of the planning, various key issues will be examined more closely with regard to citizen participation - such as the integration of cable car stations in the street area, the routing in the natural area, system properties such as size and equipment of the cabins and the structural design of the supports.
The in-depth investigation that has now been launched should be completed by the end of 2021 and enable a benefit-cost assessment of the route. On this basis, a fundamental decision about the implementation of a cable car can then be made. The city administration considers it particularly important, on the basis of this study, to involve the citizens intensively in the discussion processes and to make the content of the study transparent.
