As part of the International Textile Mosaic Exhibition the Latvian capital will be commemorating the events of 1989
The International Textile Mosaic Exhibition Riga Summer was opened to public last week on 16 August. Local and tourists alike have the opportunity to see the latest developments in the art of quilt making and anything related to the textile industry. The real gem of the exhibition, however, is the project dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way – “The Baltic Way in Textiles”. The Baltic Way otherwise known as the Baltic Chain was a peaceful demonstration on 23 August 1989. Two million citizens of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia formed a human chain which spanned for over 670 kilometers.
The exhibition “The Baltic Way in Textiles” consists of 280 mini textile mosaics, created by artists from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, who want to honour one of the most impressive and massive political demonstrations in history.
Something else worth getting excited about is the exhibition of Estonian textile artists dedicated to the 100-year anniversary of the republic of Estonia. It consists of 100 mini textile mosaics through which the creators wanted to present their country. Thus, they named their work of art “My Estonia Today”.
The exhibition will be open to visitors, free of charge until 8 September, every day between 10 AM and 6 PM.
