This is possible thanks to a unique space called Fablab Sintra
Yesterday, 26 October, at an executive meeting the Sintra City Council signed the renewal of a collaborative project between the municipality and SEAcoop – Social Entrepreneurs Agency, called Fablab Sintra. This concerns the continuing existence and support for a space designed to support people and associations in their innovative projects seeking to better the social, cultural and environmental realities and find solutions to issues in this part of Portugal.
The partnership protocol that was signed provided a budget of 42 000 euros from the municipal coffers. These funds will make the continuation of the project go without hindrances and allow various groups of lab users, such as students, unemployed, non-profits or professional companies get access to equipment and training in order to further their own projects.
Fablab Sintra is thus a place for experimentation, prototyping, generating, sharing and materialization of ideas. Its purpose is to grant equal access to the tools necessary for the successful materialization of complex undertakings for people who might have otherwise been left out due to lack of resources.
“The municipality of Sintra has been investing in policies and measures that aim to support the socio-professional realization of citizens who are unemployed. It is important to deepen these policies and measures in the current situation of increasing unemployment in the municipality, which has its origins in the pandemic, economic and social crisis that we are going through,” said Basílio Horta, the Mayor of the city.
The incubation lab counts with cutting-edge equipment, such as laser machines for engraving, a 3D printer, sewing machines, woodwork tools, embossing and vinyl cutting machines and other hardware and software necessary for the creative processes.
This year alone, even in the context of anti-pandemic restrictions, some 1400 residents from schools, associations, companies and the general community have participated in the variety of workshops offered at Fablab Sintra.
