Madrid Gastrofestival returns for its XIth edition until 23rd February
This week we'll see the launch of the 11th edition of the Gastrofestival Madrid. The event unites gastronomy, literature and tradition and will turn the capital of Spain into a capital of good food. A total of 16 municipal markets will offer food tasting, talks, workshops and gastronomic proposals for all palates from 7th to 23rd February.
The festival is organized by the Madrid City Council through the Area of Culture, Tourism and Sports, together with Madrid Fusión and extends to all 21 districts of the city. According to the Mayor of Madrid José Luis Martínez-Almeida the goal of the event is that all local residents can enjoy the rich, varied cuisine of the city, accessible to all budgets that puts Madrid in a leading position.

Quoted by the municipal website, Almeida also said that the event aims to “bring the history of the city's gastronomy to all citizens and enhance the role of municipal markets, as well as serve as a tourist attraction." He illustrated this with the fact that last year the city of Madrid received 10.5 million tourists and 10.5 billion investment for the municipality, which is a 12.6% increase compared to 2018.
In 2020 the Gastrofestival will offer 620 activities and more than 500 participating establishments and institutions, including restaurants, bars, markets, shops, bookstores, cinemas, theatres and museums. Furthermore, visitors will again enjoy unique gastronomic and cultural experiences linked to literature, art, design, solidarity or fashion.
The program will be divided into the usual thematic blocks: Gastronomic Madrid, Gastro Culture, Sensory Experiences, Eno Culture, Gastro Fashion, Gastro Health and Solidary Gastrofestival.
This year the event will pay tribute to writer Benito Pérez Galdós, on the occasion of the centenary of his death – with gastro-literary menu and performances. In addition, the culinary history of Madrid will be highlighted with special menus offered by 20 establishments. There, visitors will be able to learn about the traditions in gastronomy of Madrid by those who have transmitted it from generation to generation.
