In the wake of the coronavirus crisis, faster and more reliable ways of communication have become even more essential
Local authorities of Vienna have always been ahead of the curve when it comes to embracing new and daring technologies. Now, once again, they are proving themselves pioneers in adopting new approaches in difficult times.
Through an investment of 20 million euros, the Austrian capital aims to become the first city in Europe with area-wide 5G coverage, thus quickly ushering in the future. The need for quick and rapid expansion comes in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis when the need for faster and more reliable digital communication was put at the very centre of public discourse.
By embracing modern technologies, it is without a doubt that Vienna will once again reaffirm its position as a hotbed for innovation. The investment of 20 million euros will ensure that the city moves quickly in reaching its goals.
Current estimates suggest that city-wide 5G coverage will be available in the entirety of Vienna by July 2022, after 700 new antenna masts are installed at the municipality’s own broadcasting sites spread around the whole urban area. The project will be completed with the assistance of local pioneering companies like A1, Drei and Magenta.
On the announcement of the project, City Councillor Peter Hanke stated that "A good supply of communication technology is essential for Vienna as the most liveable city in the world. In addition to the broadband expansion using fiber optic technology, mobile communications is one of the essential features that make up an outstanding place to live and a modern business location with the latest technology. 5G is the latest generation of the mobile network and mobile Internet is becoming increasingly important. We are noticing this even now in the crisis - from home office to homeschooling. "
