Zaragoza launches a test pad for unmanned urban aircraft

This is the first European city to consider trying out this mode of mobility

At the end of March, officials in Zaragoza unveiled the first urban area in Europe dedicated to experimenting with drones and other unmanned aircraft as a sign of growing interest in this type of mobility in the urban contexts of the continent.

Hera Drone Hub, the space that has been set aside for this initiative, is located in the South Parking of the Expo, next to the AVE high-speed train station. It is also within the CTR space – the airport security area.

The Drone Hub is equipped with an Unmanned Traffic Management platform

The airspace will be used for tests, experimentation, and training in the operation of unmanned aircraft. This has been motivated by the reportedly imminent integration of these type of aircraft into the urban airspace and the future transformation of the single European sky.

"Zaragoza wants to be the European reference city for advanced mobility. The mobility of the future will be connected and autonomous, land and air, and that is why we have been working from the City Council's Public Services Area so that Zaragoza is a reference in this sector. We are strongly committed to the future and the future is already here, in the form of urban air mobility," declared the Mayor of Zaragoza, Jorge Azcón on the occasion.

Operators and manufacturers of such aircraft can request to use the space for tests and demonstration flights on Hera Drone Hub’s website. It will be available every day except Wednesdays and Sundays.

Four demonstration flights were also carried out at the event. These were the work of four operators: three local and one Chinese. One of the local participants was the local police, which carried out a simulation with a Mavic Enterprise Dual drone that was equipped with a thermal camera, a speaker and a LED lamp, necessary for the carrying out of security surveillance. Two of the operators are developing aircraft for the logistics sector.
